It is finally time to start gardening again! Here at the ranch we have all caught a heavy dose of spring fever and we are ready to go! One of our favorite things to plant is potatoes! We get the soil nice and fluffy and make the trenches. In these trenches we spread a layer of compost followed by a layer of hay (for weed control purposed) at that point we place the seed potatoes on the hay, sprinkle it all with humates and cover her up! It is the most time-consuming vegetable to plant but it is also the most rewarding.

Heres Jordan and I spreading compost.

Heres Jordan planting onions. The soil is so soft you just push the bulbs in and pack!
We try to create the perfect soil mixture by adding sand and compost to our rows. Once we till it all together we have soft fluffy soil to begin the planting process.

In 2011, Kaylyn, Jordan, Danielle and I built whats called a “high tunnel building. It is very similar to a green house but instead of potted plants and raised beds, the planting is done directly into the ground. It helps lengthen the growing season and gives the plants many growing advantages. Last year was our first growing season in the high tunnel, and we were very excited about the results we had. This year we are bringing some new ideas to the table and trying some different things to hopefully end up with an even better harvest season!
